Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) are durable and highly reliable. GHPs have fewer moving parts than conventional systems and are typically placed indoors reducing environmental exposure. Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) consist of three main elements; the heat pump, an underground heat exchanger (a system of buried tubing that allows water or coolant to disperse or collect heat) and a distribution system such as forced air or radiant floor tubing. Geothermal heat pumps use the relatively stable, year-round temperature of the Earth to heat and cool buildings. While air temperatures fluctuate throughout the year, ground temperatures stay between 45° and 70° depending on where you are located. Instead of burning fuels like natural gas and heating oil, geothermal systems pump water or coolant through the underground heat exchanger to extract heat from the ground in the cool months and disperse heat into the ground during the warmer months.
